Building a chatbot, how hard can it be? Our chief product honcho Tom gives a quick insight into how building the honcho chatbot was easier than he thought, as well as giving you the lowdown on the things you can do with it!
Before starting at honcho, I’d heard of a chatbot and understood what they do, but had never had the chance to build one. Cue our marketing agency coming to us with the idea that we could use one to talk to our customers with only the minimum of up-front effort. It’s safe to say that I was a little sceptical as to how easy this was going to be, no sleepless nights (thankfully) but a touch of nervousness.
Turns out I shouldn’t have worried, it’s easier than Sunday morning. There are tons of websites out there that claim to offer the best solution (research ‘chatbot’ and see for yourself), so there’s no end of choice. Once you’re registered and have linked it all up to your FB profile it’s a case of click and drag to build the elements you want. These range from simple text on-screen, to images and GIFs, to more clever stuff like ‘AI’ (artificial intelligence) being able to recognise and respond to things that people ask it.
(Humble brag alert) Now I’m no Bill Gates, but I’d managed to learn the tool and build a first draft of the honcho chatbot within a day and a half…kudos to the folks that created the tool. There have been a few improvements and tweaks since that initial draft (do your research on other’s chatbots) and now we have something that is not only super cool but also does what we need it to. It tells people about our product, when we plan to launch and our ‘AI’ solution also provides answers the FAQs that people ask us all the time.
What’s the point of this story? Don’t get worried by something you know little about (technically or otherwise) until you’ve jumped in and given it a go….you never know it might be easier than you think!
