Is this the ultimate first car?

A mere 44 years since its initial launch in 1975, the Volkswagen Polo is still regarded as one of the most reliable cars to grace the roads of the UK. With 500,000 produced by 1979, the Germans’ cheap and cheerful approach to the thriving hatchback market was met with open arms. Today, it is still one of the most popular cars on the road with almost 100 Polos sold every hour worldwide. But why are they so popular and why do we think this could be the ultimate first car?

1 - Price

With a base price of £15,735 the Polo is one of the cheapest new cars available. Alternatively, for a sportier look choose a ‘Polo Beats’ edition for £16,795 which features various exterior upgrades as well as inbuilt beats audio! If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to that, you can drive away a used Polo on Driver 1 - which we think is a smart idea - for around only £140 a month!

2 - Insurance

Insurance is a deal-breaker for new drivers, with the average premium for 17-22 year olds already over £1,300 a year! Luckily, the Volkswagen Polo is a Group 1 car – the lowest insurance bracket available which, along with using the honcho app, will give you the best chance at getting the cheapest insurance.

3 - Look at it!

As far as first cars go, the Polo is one of the sleekest around! Compared to the usual suspects such as the Nissan Micra, Fiat 500 or VW Up, the Polo is miles ahead.

4 - Cheap to run!

With the baseline Polo boasting 57.6mpg it is one of the most efficient cars on the market, meaning those scary petrol stops won’t be quite as scary costing only 10p per mile! Here’s how this compares to other popular first car choices:

  • Toyota Aygo – 68.9mpg (9p per mile)
  • VW Up – 67.3mpg (9p per mile)
  • Ford Ka – 56.4mpg (10p per mile)
  • Citroen C1 – 52.2mpg (11p per mile)
  • Fiat 500 – 50.4mpg (12p per mile)
  • Nissan Micra - 46.3mpg (13p per mile)
  • Lamborghini Hurucan Performante – 16.9mpg (38p per mile)

5 - Tech

Every Polo comes standard with ‘App Connect’ which means you can use Apple CarPlay, Android Auto or Mirror Link in your car. You’ll never be tempted to glance at your phone again when you’re driving, with all your apps including music and navigation available right on your dashboard!

6 - It’s a VW!

Volkswagen translates to reliable, or at least it should do!

So, is the Polo the ultimate first car.. We think it may well be, what do you think?
